Menstruation, also known as a period is the regular discharge of blood and mucosal tissue from the inner lining of the uterus through the vagina. The menstrual cycle occurs due to the rise and fall of hormones resulting in the thickening the uterus lining and production of an egg released around day 14 in the cycle. If pregnancy does not occur, the lining is released in what is known as menstruation. Most of the time, periods will be in the range of 21 to 35 days apart.

Up to 80% of women report having some symptoms prior to menstruation and they include: Abdominal or pelvic cramping, lower back pain, bloating and sore breasts, food cravings, headache and fatigue
